Our Services

Our Services

  • What’s Up is a professional telephone counselling service for all New Zealanders aged 5 to 18 on 0800 WHATSUP (0800 942 87 87).
  • What’s Up is available free of charge throughout New Zealand seven days a week, from 12 midday to 12 midnight.
  • Callers can ask to talk to the same counsellor again.
  • Unique methods of training, quality control and supervision.
  • Collection and analysis of information on children’s problems as perceived by the children themselves.
  • Advocacy on behalf of children and young people where their interests are ignored, minimised or under-represented.

Our Values

Our service is strongly shaped by the values of:

  • child centred practice
  • confidentiality
  • empowerment

What’s Up has six principles that allow counsellors to implement these organisational values:

  • Calls are confidential and anonymous *excepting Duty of Care considerations.
  • All callers are treated with respect.
  • Callers are free to choose the gender of the counsellor to whom they speak.
  • Callers are able to access the same counsellor if they wish to call back.
  • Callers are encouraged to give feedback about What’s Up and the service they receive.
  • Counsellors are fully professional: they are appropriately paid, thoroughly trained and held accountable for their counselling skills and knowledge, and their continuing professional development is supported and monitored.

* FOOTNOTE - Duty of Care
Where our staff are concerned that there is a risk of imminent harm to the caller or others, our Duty of Care protocol is activated, which may involve passing necessary information about the caller to other people without the caller’s consent.
