Depression can influence the way you think, and your ability to cope with day-to-day tasks such as sleeping, eating, and relationships with family and friends.
Feeling down when you're facing a tough time is normal and happens to everyone at some point in their lives. These down feelings usually fade over time, but depression is more than this – it's when these feelings are intense and don’t go away even when things improve.
What does depression look like?
People are affected by depression in different ways and that’s okay, but it can help to be aware of what’s going on for you. You may experience depression through:
- Your emotions:
- feeling sad, angry, grumpy or worthless most of the time
- losing interest in the things you usually like
- feeling empty or lonely
- Your body:
feeling restless, unable to relax or lacking energy
- having trouble sleeping or sleeping a lot
- eating a lot more or not wanting to eat
- a big weight loss or weight gain
- isolating yourself from friends and/or family
losing your concentration or forgetfulness
having thoughts about self-harm

What can you do to deal with depression?
There are things you can do to manage what’s happening, such as:
- doing something active – like playing a sport or going for a walk
- doing something creative – paint, write, write a song, sing, draw, make something, find a way to express yourself creatively
- taking care of yourself – eat healthily and try to reduce stress
